apple edu store for base model M4 seems like a better deal, especially since you can expand storage yourself now through 3rd party adaptors

    • Mac Mini M4
      16/256gb - $815.10
      16/512GB - $1,103.30

      Via Apple on campus.

Combine with 10% apple gift cards to get it even lower

    • Are there any problems using USB3 external SSD permanently mounted in OSX?

      • +1

I have 2 plugged into my MBP M1 Max using Sabrent enclosures no issues.

        • +3

With thunderbolt 4 the external drive can be faster than the internal drive. Need a fast NVME SSD, supported TB4 enclosure and a supporting cable of course.

          I use a ZIKE Drive.

      • +1

Make sure to format the SSD drives to APFS not exFat or whatever. Optional, disable index for Finder on the external if you don't got a good thermal solution.

    • Has annyone actually got the iBoff SSD?

      • +3

Not sure why people are hyped about iBoff's specific version of SSD. It's on pre-order for too long and the version uses SanDisk NANDs are at least 30% more expensive than other competition which are readily available for months. With the same price (US$270) you can get the latest version with 1:1 copied PCB and Kioxia NAND instead (which is better in stability and thermal).

        • Could you please send a link? Definitely interested.

          • +1

@Butter Finger: Just search “Mac mini SSD” on Taobao and looking for variants says “10层板” (means 10-layer PCB) and/or 1:1. Some sellers would also note either 闪迪 (for SanDisk) or 东芝 (for Kioxia/Toshiba) if you’re looking for specific NAND.

Taobao’s international shipping usually won’t ship electronics like these so you’ll probably need to source your own shipping forwarder.

  • do you need to be a student to get the EDU discount?

  • This might seem counter intuitive to most, but is it possible to run Windows on the M chips now?

    • +3

      short answer - no

long answer - windows on arm using vmware fusion. works well enough for simple games

    • +3

Yeah through a VM. UTM, VMWare, Parallels etc. it’s crazy but in some circumstances people have found virtualised Windows can run faster on Apple silicon than on native wintel devices.

  • Any deals for a dirt cheap mac mini?

    • +1

look for a second hand one on marketplace.

  • +1

Apple Mac Mini cheaper than a mid-ranged Video card!!

  • Can I use the student discount for this deal?

    • just go to edu store as someone posted above and grab the M4.

  • Bit of a newbie, especially with Apple products. Would i be able to play Flight Simulator games on these machines or do i need a PC? Thanks.

    • Not natively, but you can probably stream it over xbox cloud gaming.

Controller support would also be a nightmare

    • If this is the sort of budget you have, maybe an Xbox Series X would suit you better. It can run the game natively. If your budget can go higher, look for a mid-range PC deal.
